Five hundred twenty-six thousand six hundred … auditionees? Let’s hope so because auditions for the incredible rock musical RENT are now open!
RENT is a truly iconic show, a vibrant reworking of La Bohème depicting life on the artistic fringes of society in 1990s New York. It tackles hope and despair, life and death, and the joys and horrors of being young, penniless and incapable of living without creativity.
Written at the height of the AIDS crisis, by a writer whose community and friendship group was severely affected by the epidemic, RENT is nonetheless a life-affirming show about love and embracing life when there’s “no day but today”.
Although set in the 1990s, it is also a show which resonates with the times we are living in now: the tension between artistic fulfilment and technological development, the difficulties in meeting the day-to-day costs of living, and the sneaking feeling that we own far, far less than we rent.
